OWL EYES
Weekly Program in Georgetown
Earth Native is excited to continue our award-winning weekly nature programs north of Austin at Georgetown’s beautiful Garey Park, conveniently positioned right between Leander and Georgetown.
Owl Eyes is a weekly nature and wilderness skills education course that runs on weekdays from September - May for children ages 6-12 years old (see below for age ranges by program day). Our skilled instructors will work closely with Owl Eyes students to help them develop specialized knowledge about nature, authentic deep connections to the natural world, awaken sensory awareness and cultivate knowledge of place. Not only will Owl Eyes students learn a ton about natural and physical outdoor skills but they will do so while building self confidence and peaceful interpersonal relationships within a supportive community.
The Owl Eyes program is offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
Tuesday - Ages 9-12
Wednesday - Ages 6-9
Thursday - Ages 9-12
Friday - Ages 6-9

At Earth Native, our unique teaching methods center around the 8 Shields Nature Mentoring Model, a method of teaching and learning that is based on inspiration as the fuel that drives learning, tracking of natural learning cycles in order to successfully steward the entire learning experience, and core routines that have been used by ancestral human communities across the world for thousands of years to create a deep lifelong understanding of nature and natural systems. Our “invisible school” teaching approach uses your child’s passions and natural inspirations as the spark that drives their education outdoors. When learning is truly driven by inspiration, school doesn’t feel like school and learning is built right into every game and adventure we embark on.
Each week at Owl Eyes, children will explore, hear inspiring stories, practice traditional and wilderness survival skills, play games and practice core routines that will help them to establish competence and knowledge in areas such as:
-
Wilderness Survival and Bushcraft Skills
-
Edible and Medicinal Plants
-
Wildlife Tracking and Animal Behavior Studies
-
Interpretation of Bird Language
-
Ecology
-
Camouflage and Stealth
-
Natural Navigation Techniques
-
Shelters and Knots
-
Crafting Using Natural Materials
-
Knife and Saw Safety and Use
-
....and much more!
Enrollment for 2026-27 is now open! If your desired program is full, join the waitlist. We see a lot of movement in the first few weeks, and you will very likely get a spot if you join the waitlist quickly!
(Tuesday and Thursday programs are full.)
Wondering if Owl Eyes is right for your 6-year-old?
There’s no doubt about it—kids love our programs! However, not every 6-year-old is quite ready for the unique experience of Owl Eyes at Garey Park. With its rolling hills and some magical spots requiring longer hikes, this program can be a bit more demanding.
If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, consider the questions below. If you find yourself answering “no” to half or more of them, it might be worth waiting a year or exploring other programs like our Wild Outside Program at McKinney Falls State Park or the Farm and Forest Roots Program at our Bastrop campus.

-
Does your child eat snacks, drink water, and manage personal needs without constant reminders?
-
Are they willing to put on a coat or extra layers when needed, even when prompted?
-
Can they self-regulate or calm themselves (with adult support) when facing challenges?
-
Are they eager to try new activities and explore outside their comfort zone?
-
Do they enjoy playing and collaborating with other children?
-
Can they transition and follow directions, even when fully immersed in an activity?
-
Do they understand and respond appropriately to safety instructions?
-
Are they able to manage their backpack and belongings on their own?

Thank you for helping us ensure that Owl Eyes is an enjoyable and enriching experience for every participant!

A Message from Earth Native Founder Dave Scott:

Parents often ask what the outcomes of our ongoing programs are. It is a fair question, and it is also hard to answer, because the most important results are not always easy to measure or put into words.

Lately, I have come to think of our work as foundation building. In partnership with caring parents, families, and community, Earth Native helps build the foundations of competent, confident, knowledgeable, and capable young people. Our programs provide the environment, opportunities, structure, experiences, community, and curriculum that support that long term growth.

Yes, students learn a huge amount of knowledge and skills. They connect deeply with nature and learn plants, animals, tracking, ecology, and seasonal patterns. Depending on the program, they may also learn wilderness skills, tool use, farm animal care, gardening, and how to work with their hands.
But I have come to understand that it is the unquantifiable things that often matter even more. It was the cold day they pushed through that strengthened their confidence and resolve. It is the hard-earned lessons about their own limits and how to assess risk with good judgment. It is the self-reliance that grows when they learn to manage their own gear and responsibilities. Not every student stays long enough to experience all of these shifts, but over the last 15 years, I have watched the kids who return year after year grow into truly incredible young adults, and I believe Earth Native had a hand in helping build the foundation on which they stand.

In an evolving world where AI is developing rapidly and knowledge is becoming increasingly accessible, what will set your child apart is not just what they know but who they become. At Earth Native, we help our students build strength, competence, character, and resilience, traits that are increasingly rare in today’s world and increasingly important for whatever comes next.

I hope to see you soon.

Best,
Dave Scott
